This site, within Glen Eden’s town centre and just 350m from the Glen Eden train station, is a redevelopment of a large brownfield area. The surrounding environment is a mixture of residential and commercial character developments with the site very much functioning as an ‘entrance’ to the town centre.

The architectural design responds to the strategic location and seeks to establish a more urban response to the street frontage while acknowledging the adjacent Playhouse Theatre. The design offers a different typology of townhouses, that are accessed from a first floor deck. This approach means the design can present a commercial frontage, uplift in residential density and successfully disguise parking areas. In terms of size, the units are generally larger than other similar apartment developments.

The building’s character is based on the concept of deck accessed town houses. The design is traditional in style and offers two bedroomed living with the northern terrace also providing a small garden area. The short terrace block also has a deck access area. The relationship between plan, mass, and sub mass together with façade treatment ensures the buildings retain a human scale. The architects proposed a combination of materials to create an individual identity and overall visual coherence.

This approach offers distinctive high quality architecture complemented by well designed and detailed open spaces. The development has an identifiable visual character and because of the nature of the site, promotes a strong neighbourhood identity.
